Coast Guard medevacs man suffering appendicitis near Dutch Harbor

JUNEAU, Alaska – The Coast Guard medevaced a 22-year-old Chinese man near Dutch Harbor from the 900-foot cargo ship, Fei He, Saturday morning after he was reported to be suffering from appendicitis.

An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley was launched along with an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak.

Jian Liu was safely hoisted 100 miles south of Dutch Harbor by the helicopter crew and transported to Dutch Harbor where an emergency Guardian Flight was waiting to fly Liu to Providence Hospital in Anchorage.

The Coast Guard originally recieved notification yesterday from the master of the Fei He and prepared assets to stand by to assist when the vessel came in range of the Coast Guard helicopter. The Fei He was directed to head toward Dutch Harbor where Coast Guard assets could safely reach the vessel and medevac Liu.

The Fei He was transiting from Yokahama, Japan to Mexico carrying containers.
