Coast Guard medevacs man near Galveston

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard medevaced a man from a crane barge approximately seven miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, today.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a call at about 3 p.m. from the captain of the crane barge Philadelphia Express, reporting that a crewmember needed immediately medical attention. The young man had been climbing on the crane when he had injured his hand.

Coast Guard Air Station Houston diverted an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew that was on patrol to assist.

When the rescue helicopter crew arrived on scene to hoist the injured man, the crane became a difficulty to the helicopter crew. Conducting the hoist at over 120 feet above the boat, they were able to medevac the injured man and safely transport him to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

The injured man was reported to be in stable condition.
