Coast Guard medevacs man from dive vessel 32 miles off Bald Head Island, NC

Coast Guard District 5 NewsPORTSMOUTH, Va. — Coast Guard rescue helicopter and boat crews medevaced a 59-year-old man after a dive accident 32 miles southeast of Bald Head Island, N.C., Thursday.

A crewmember aboard the dive boat, Hawk’s Bill, called Coast Guard Sector North Carolina at approximately 3 p.m. reporting that a diver had lost consciousness after completing a 70-minute dive to depths of 100 feet.

A 41-foot Utility Boat crew from Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach, N.C., and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston, S.C., launched to assist the man.

After arriving on scene, the man was transferred to the UTB before being airlifted by the Dolphin’s crew at approximately 5 p.m.

The Dolphin crew transported the diver to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C., where he was pronounced dead.
