HOUSTON — A 33-year-old man was medevaced Saturday afternoon after he was believed to be experiencing stroke-like symptoms, approximately 85 miles off Galveston.

The captain aboard the 36-foot chartered fishing boat Catch Hitter called Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders at 11:47 a.m., to report the mans condition and ask for assistance.

The watchstanders launched an aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Houston.

The aircrew transferred the man to the University of Texas Medical Branch in stable condition.

“In this case, it’s a lucky break that the captain had a satellite phone on board and was able to contact us when his radio was out of range,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class John Terrell, an operations specialist at Sector Houston-Galveston. “Being prepared for any contingency is the hallmark of a professional mariner. Always know the limitations of your gear and have a backup plan.”
