Coast Guard medevacs kayaker near Ocracoke, N.C.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Coast Guard medically evacuated a 58-year-old man who requested assistance while kayaking eight nautical miles west of Ocracoke Saturday.

The Coast Guard’s 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth, Va., received a 406 radio beacon alert at 1:30 p.m. registered for a sea kayak.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina was able to contact the owner of the kayak who confirmed that he had set off his Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon because he was having chest pains and needed assistance.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City was launched at 2 p.m., while a 25-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Hatters Inlet was sent to assist.

The boat crew arrived on scene and transported the man to a dredge island.

The helicopter crew then transferred him from the dredge island to Carteret General Hospital.
