Coast Guard medevacs injured merchant sailor

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard MH-60 rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., medevaced an injured merchant sailor from a ship 110 miles east of Wilmington, N.C., Friday morning.

The Coast Guard was contacted by the crew of the 570-foot motor vessel Atlantic Trader requesting the medevac of a 57-year-old crewmember onboard experiencing symptoms of a stroke.

The Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew hoisted the crewmember from the Atlantic Trader and transported him to the New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington for treatment.

“It was definitely one of our tougher rescues,” said Coast Guard Lt. Ally Shuler. “We encountered some nasty weather both enroute to the scene and while we were conducting the hoist,” said Shuler.

“It’s a good feeling knowing that we were able to overcome some nasty conditions and help this gentleman get the medical treatment he needed,” said Shuler.
