Coast Guard medevacs injured merchant sailor near Bermuda

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., medevaced an injured crew member from a merchant vessel 230 miles northeast of Bermuda Monday morning.

Watchstanders at the Rescue Coordination Center Norfolk were contacted by RCC Bermuda Saturday, requesting assistance medevacing a 26-year-old crewmember from the motor vessel BUTTERFLY who suffered injuries following a fall into one of the vessel’s ballast tanks 860 miles northeast of Bermuda.

Watchstanders directed the vessel to start sailing towards Bermuda to get within safe flying distance for the helicopter to hoist the injured crewmember from the vessel.

The helicopter crew hoisted the crewmember from the BUTTERFLY at 6:40 a.m., and flew him to the Bermuda International Airport where they transferred him to local medical personnel who transferred him to the King Edward Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

The helicopter crew is scheduled to return to Elizabeth City Tuesday.
