ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Coast Guard medevaced a 31-year-old man with a head injury from Pelican, Alaska, Thursday.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka transported the man to emergency medical personnel in Sitka for treatment.

Watchstanders at the 17th District command center in Juneau received the injury report from the crew of the pleasure craft Vava II who said the man had fallen on the pier and suffered a head injury. The duty flight surgeon in Juneau recommended medevac and the helicopter crew was dispatched to the scene.

“Our hoist capable helicopters are an ideal resource to respond to emergency medical situations in Southeast Alaska,” said Lt. Matthew Herring, a Coast Guard Jayhawk pilot at Coast Guard Air Station Sitka. “Our crews train regularly in order to safely and efficiently transport the sick and injured to a higher level of care when necessary.”
