Coast Guard medevacs injured logger from Prince of Wales Island

JUNEAU, Alaska – A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced an injured logger from Prince of Wales Island after a tree reportedly fell on him Tuesday at 2:52 p.m.

Watchstanders at the 17th Coast Guard District command center received a phone call from the Alaska State Troopers reporting the logging accident and requested Coast Guard assistance at 11:34 a.m.

The helicopter rescue crew was diverted during a routine flight at 11:40 a.m. and lowered a rescue swimmer at 1:38 p.m. The rescue crew had to refuel in Ketchikan prior to reurning and hoisting the injured logger at 2:52 p.m.

The helicopter crew then transported him to awaiting emergency medical personnel at the Ketchikan International Airport who transferred him to Ketchikan General Hospital at 3:20 p.m.
