Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England’s command center received the report at approximately 8:30 p.m. from the captain aboard the Ocean Boy, a 74-foot fishing boat homeported in New Bedford, that one of his crewmembers injured a hand and needed medical attention.
A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Menemsha launched, arrived on scene at approximately 9:20 p.m., and brought the injured man aboard.
They transported him to Coast Guard Station Woods Hole, arrived at approximately 10 p.m., and quickly transferred care to Barnstable County Emergency Medical Services who was awaiting them at the pier.
“We recognized we had to move fast,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Andrew Stokes, the operations unit controller at Sector Southeastern New England’s command center. He said a quick response coupled with seamless coordination between the Coast Guard and EMS ensured the man received immediate advanced care.
