Coast Guard locates overdue boaters near Prince William Sound, Alaska

Coast Guard Alaska News
KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard located three boaters reported overdue near Prince William Sound, Tuesday morning.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew forward deployed in Cordova located the missing boaters anchored in Lower Passage on the north side of Knight Island. The mariners reported the vessel had engine problems and were unable to return as planned.

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Long Island remained with the vessel to assess the condition of the mariners and vessel. There were no reported injuries.

“The Coast Guard encourages mariners to have multiple means of communications to contact help in emergencies,” said Sector Anchorage Command Center Search and Rescue Coordinator Michael McNeil. “The Coast Guard also highly encourages boaters to file float plans with their family or friends letting them know planned routes and destinations, planned dates as well as safety and communications gear available.”

The Coast Guard also recommends boaters get a free safety exam or take a safety boating class through their local auxiliary.  More information can be found at www.safeboating.org.
