Coast Guard, local agencies searching for person in the water

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Coast Guard, along with members of Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Chatham County Sherriff’s Office, are searching for a person in the water Sunday, in the vicinity of Rose Dhu Island, on the Vernon River.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center received a report at 12 p.m., from a good Samaritan, stating that two individuals were in the water after their 15-foot Jon Boat capsized. One of the individuals was recovered by the good Samaritan. The other, a 57-year-old man, was reported still missing.

Sector Charleston watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched Coast Guardsmen from Coast Guard Station Tybee. Additionally, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston was diverted to assist in the search at 12:10 p.m.

Members from Georgia DNR and the Chatham County Sherriff’s Office dive team are also participating in the search. Sea Tow has been contracted to conduct salvage operations for the capsized vessel.

It was reported the individuals in the capsized craft were not wearing lifejackets.
