Coast Guard, local agencies searching for missing swimmer off Smith Point Beach, N.Y.

NEW YORK — Coast Guard rescue crews and local agencies are searching for a swimmer who reportedly went missing off Smith Point Beach, Sunday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound were notified by the Suffolk County Police Department at about 6:40 p.m., of an African American man between the age of 19 to 21 years, wearing a white and grey swim suit who reportedly went missing while swimming.

The missing swimmer’s friends initially notified local life guards and park police that their friend swam out off the beach and didn’t return.

The Coast Guard launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island and a 29-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Moriches to assist local agencies in the search for the missing swimmer.
