NEW YORK – Coast Guard crews responded to a vessel collision in the State Boat Channel in Lindquist, N.Y., today.

A Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound communications watchstander received notification from TOW Boat U.S. that a good samaritan reported a vessel collision with injuries and one boat taking on water.

A response boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island along with Suffolk County Marine crews responded to the recreational boating collision involving a 21-foot Wellcraft with two people aboard and a 20-foot Mako with two people aboard.

The good samaritan on scene transferred two people onto their boat from the sinking vessel. Station Fire Island transferred two injured boaters to emergency response personnel on shore. TOW Boat U.S. began salvage operations to refloat the sunken Mako in order for Suffolk County Marine to investigate the cause of the collision.

“We weren’t able to get our boat in close enough to transfer the injured boaters so the good sam assisted us by transferring the injured personnel from his vessel onto ours,” said Petty Officer Second Dan Wishnoff. “On our transit in, we treated the boaters with first aid until we were able to transfer them to EMS.”

The conditions of the injured boaters are not known and the cause of the vessel collision is under investigation by Suffolk County Marine.

“In addition to having your proper safety equipment on board, it’s also important to boat smart by maintaining a proper lookout at all times aboard your vessel,” added Wishnoff. “If you find yourself in an emergency situation, contact the Coast Guard immediately on VHF Channel 16.
