Coast Guard Lieutenant receives USO Military Leadership Award

NEW YORK – Coast Guard Lt. Sarah Janaro was presented the USO’s Coast Guard Military Leadership Award at the 47th Annual USO Woman of the Year luncheon, May 2, 2013.

During the luncheon, hosted at the Pierre Hotel, the 2013 Woman of the Year Distinguished Service Award was presented to Gisel Ruiz, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Walmart U.S. The USO also honored a senior female military officer and presented five Military Leadership Awards to one female service member from each branch of the armed forces, highlighting their incredible stories of exceptional bravery and grace under the most extreme conditions.

Janaro was selected as the Coast Guard honoree because of the significant role she played as the Operations Section Chief of the Long Island Sound Incident Management Team (IMT) during Hurricane Sandy.  Throughout this major weather event, she managed vast amounts of information with astute organizational skill, sometimes single-handedly, during the storm’s landfall and subsequent overnight shifts.  In addition to directing the daily operational picture, she perpetually adjusted personnel schedules and manning requirements for the IMT, including Coast Guard members at both Nassau and Suffolk Counties’ Emergency Operations Centers.  She was critical in creating and establishing the tools and processes that enabled the IMT to successfully respond to affected Coast Guard units’ needs, restore normal operations, and care and account for Coast Guard personnel and their family members affected by the storm.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Janaro when asked about being selected for this award. “It was very special to stand next to my fellow servicewomen during the USO Woman of the Year luncheon and be recognized in this way. I am grateful to all of the women that proudly serve our nation, and to the USO for their continued support of the Armed Services”.
