Coast Guard Investigates Oil Sheen Off Breton Island Coast

NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard and other spill response groups are coordinating efforts to investigate and clean up an oil sheen found off the coast of Breton Island, yesterday.

A vessel in the vicinity of Breton Island reported the sheen to the Coast Guard at approximately 9:30 a.m. yesterday, May 24. A Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter and crew were launched to gather more information. The overflight spotted a four-mile-wide oil sheen 10 miles southeast of Breton Island. Another overflight today confirmed that the sheen is located toward the south of the original sighting.
