Coast Guard, Hawaii County Fire Department continue search for Big Island fisherman

14th Coast Guard District NewsHONOLULU – Coast Guard and Hawaii County Fire Department air and surface assets continue to search for overdue Big Island fisherman Mitchell Wailani, Sunday.

Mr. Wailani embarked on a multi-day fishing trip on Tuesday and has not been in contact with family or friends since Thursday.

The 80 year-old Hawaii resident was reported overdue at approximately 4:00 p.m. Saturday. A Hawaii County Fire Department helicopter spotted and confirmed Mr. Wailani’s vessel aground with no one aboard in the vicinity of Papaikou, Hawaii late Saturday evening.

The search for Mr. Wailani is ongoing. Hawaii County Fire Department rescue crews, along with aircrews aboard an HC-130 Hercules aircraft and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, will continue to search throughout the day. The crew aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, a Hilo-based 110-foot patrol boat, will remain on scene and continue to search throughout the night.
