Coast Guard establishes safety zone in Fort Pierce Inlet following tragic accident

d7MIAMI — The Coast Guard is alerting boaters of a temporary safety zone established at Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida, Wednesday.

The safety zone will help ensure the safety and security of vessels as there is a sunken barge partially blocking the channel.

Tuesday afternoon, Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce and local agencies responded to the sinking of a barge that was being towed.

The Coast Guard and local partners were able to rescue three people and a dog but one person was later found deceased.

“Our condolences go out to all affected by this tragic loss of life,” said Capt. Austin Gould, Coast Guard Sector Miami Commander. “We have established a safety zone for the time being ensuring no further loss of life or property occurs until we are able to determine the next course of action to remove the submerged barge.”

There is no timeline at the moment as to when the inlet will reopen.
