Coast Guard Establishes Safety Zone for Columbus Day Weekend

MIAMI – The Coast Guard is establishing a slow-speed safety zone between Rickenbacker Causeway and the Featherbed Banks in the Intracoastal Waterway from 6 p.m. until midnight, Saturday and Sunday.

Vessels transiting the safety zone shall proceed at speeds not greater than 20 miles per hour. Vessel operators that violate the safety zone’s 20-mile-per-hour speed limit may be subject to a fine of up to $32,500.

The slow-speed safety zone is being established to help boaters stay safe during the evening and generally the most dangerous hours of the Columbus Day weekend. Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assets will conduct patrols to enforce the safety zone.

“By establishing the slow-speed safety zone we are helping reduce the chance of boating accidents and loss of life during what is possibly the most dangerous time of the day during a holiday weekend known for a high volume of recreational boating and unfortunately, a history of boating accidents,” said Lt. j.g. Christopher Svencer, the Sector Miami assistant chief for Waterways Management.
