Coast Guard Cutter Tybee to hold change of command

WOODS HOLE, Mass. – A change of command ceremony is scheduled for the Coast Guard Cutter Tybee at 10 a.m., on the pier at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Mass., Thursday.

Lt. Andrew S. Weiss, will assume responsibility as commanding officer of the Tybee from Lt. Cmdr. Blake D. Stockwell, in a time-honored ceremony that formally transfers authority and accountability from one individual to another. Weiss will serve as Tybee’s thirteenth commanding officer.

Stockwell, Tybee’s previous commanding officer, will be transferring to the Atlantic Area as part of the Operations Planning and Implementation Division.

Capt. Raymond Perry, commander of Sector Southeastern New England, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker.

The ceremony is designed to strengthen the respect for the continuity of command which is vital to any military organization. The culmination of the ceremony is reached when both officers read their orders, face one another, salute, and transfer responsibility of the command. This provides the entire command an opportunity to witness this transfer of responsibility and know that the officer directed to take command is doing so under proper authority.

Coast Guard Cutter Tybee is a 110-foot ship, with a crew of 16 active-duty personnel who carry out search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, and a new focus on maritime homeland security.
