BOSTON — The Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba departed Boston, March 27, 2011, to take part in the world’s oldest multi-lateral maritime exercise.

The Escanaba deployed to Brazil for the annual UNITAS naval exercise along with several other U.S. Navy Ships and navy ships of many other allied navies.

The UNITAS deployment is a primary means of supporting regional stability in the Western Hemisphere. The 51-years-old operation is the largest annual field exercise south of the U.S. border.

The exercise is an opportunity for allied naval units to conduct exercises together, to develop professional relations and form partnerships that will allow the Escanaba crew to better perform their job on the sea.

The Escanaba crew will also be participating in several humanitarian and community relation projects while deployed.

The 270-foot medium endurance cutter is based in Boston.
