Coast Guard Cutter Diligence to return from patrol on Friday

5th Coast Guard District News
WILIMINGTON, N.C. – The crew aboard the Wilmington-based Coast Guard Cutter Diligence is scheduled to return to homeport Friday following a 37-day patrol in the North Atlantic Ocean in support of Operation Atlantic Venture.

During the patrol the crew aboard the Diligence served as the at-sea commander for Operation Atlantic Venture to oversee and direct the operations of nine other Coast Guard assets throughout the course of the operation. This involved the crew coordinating the patrol efforts of both air and surface assets to enforce a full spectrum of federal laws related to vessel safety, maritime security and to protect New England fish stocks.

“Operation Atlantic Venture provided a great opportunity for Diligence and her crew to conduct a broad spectrum of Coast Guard missions,” said Cmdr. Jeff Randall, commanding officer of Coast Guard Cutter Diligence.

The combined efforts of the crew aboard the Diligence and the other nine Coast Guard assets involved in the operation resulted in 81 vessel inspections that identified numerous violations of federal safety and federal fisheries regulations.

The crew aboard the Diligence completed 33 vessel inspections and assisted the Navy by maintaining a safety zone for several exercises. In addition to law enforcement activities the crew also focused on crew training and proficiency. As a result the crew was able to complete several initial and recurrent qualification requirements.

The Diligence is a 210-foot medium endurance cutter with a crew of approximately 70.
