Coast Guard Cutter Alert returns home to Astoria today

SEATTLE – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Alert will return to their homeport in Astoria, Ore., Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

While on a routine patrol in the Eastern Pacific, the crew of the Alert successfully interdicted a Self-Propelled Semi-Submersible vessel (SPSS) laden with approximately 5,000 kg. of cocaine.

An SPSS is a vessel which operates just below the surface of the water and is capable of carrying thousands of kilograms of illegal narcotics to either an offloading vessel or the shores of the United States.
