Coast Guard crews suspend search for swimmer near Spring Lake, N.J.

SPRING LAKE, N.J. – The Coast Guard suspended its search Monday for a missing swimmer near Spring Lake Beach here.

The Coast Guard received a call at 5:06 p.m. Sunday reporting two 40-year-old swimmers were caught in a rip tide.

One swimmer was recovered by members of the Spring Lake Beach Patrol unconscious and transferred to emergency medical personnel who took him to the hospital. The man was later pronounced deceased.

Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, N.J., a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., a C-130 airplane crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., crewmembers aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Finback homeported in Cape May, N.J., members of the Spring Lake Police Department and Beach Patrol and members of the New Jersey State Police searched 765 square miles for the missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard and local agencies have received no missing person reports.
