Coast Guard crews suspend search for missing person off Elliot Key, Fla.

MIAMI – Coast Guard crews suspended the search, Friday evening, for a man who was last heard from Christmas day by his family members.

Missing is Mark Myhre, a 62-year old Bay City, Wis., resident, an believed owner of the sailing vessel Galilean.

Coast Guard Sector Miami received a report from a good Samaritan of the beached sailing vessel on the ocean side of Elliot Key, Wednesday. The good Samaritan reported that the Galilean had no visible signs of growth on the lines in the water and did not see anyone near the beached vessel.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Miami, a smallboat crew from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Fla., and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Knight Island were launched to the search the surrounding area. Additionally, Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue crews were launched to assist with the search.

  • Coast Guard Cutter Knight Island, a 110-foot patrol boat, homeported in Key West, Fla.
  • Coast Guard Cutter Cormorant, an 87-foot patrol boats homeported in Fort Pierce, Fla.
  • Coast Guard Cutter Sawfish, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Key West, Fla.
  • HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami
  • MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Miami
  • Response boat crews from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach Fla., Islandmorada Fla., and Marathon, Fla.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission boatcrews
  • Monroe County Sheriffs Office crewmembers
  • Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue crews
