Coast Guard coordinates assistance to vessel in distress

MIAMI — Search-and-rescue coordinators at the Seventh Coast Guard District command center in Miami coordinated assistance to a vessel in distress about 370 miles north of the Dominican Republic Saturday.

The Coast Guard received a report Saturday morning that the U.S.-flagged 58-foot fishing vessel Big Eye was disabled with a cargo net entangled in its propeller about 370 miles north of the Dominican Republic.

Using AMVER, the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System, search-and-rescue coordinators at the Seventh Coast Guard District diverted the crew of the Panamanian-flagged 558-foot tanker Bow Harmony to render assistance to the crew of the disabled fishing vessel Big Eye. The Bow Harmony crew arrived on scene with the crew of the Big Eye by early afternoon Saturday.

No medical concerns were reported.

The fishing vessel Big Eye has been featured on the Discovery Channel series “Swords.”
