Coast Guard, Columbia County Sheriff search for man missing near Scappoose, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard and Columbia County Sheriff’s Department are searching for a man missing near Scappoose, Ore.

Columbia County 911 recieved a report of an empty 16-foot beige and green fishing boat near Coon Island in the Multnomah Strait at 9:52 a.m. and later confirmed the boat belonged to a 51-year-old Cornelius, Ore., man, who was reported overdue by his wife at approximately the same time. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River in Astoria dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria and a 25-response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Portland, Ore., to aid a Columbia County Sheriff’s Department boat crew in the search for the man.

The helicopter crew returned to Air Station Astoria at approximately 1 p.m. and the response boat crew returned to Portland at approximately 2:30 p.m. The Coast Guard will continue to broadcast a notice to mariners on VHF Channel 16 seeking information on the whereabouts of the man.

Anyone with information, which may lead to finding the man should contact the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department at 503-366-4611 or Coast Guard Sector Columbia River at 503-861-6211. He was last seen at approximately 12 p.m. Friday wearing a burgundy or dark flannel or sweater, black or blue jeans and hiking boots. He is reported to be 5’8″, 160lbs. with brownish grey hair.
