Coast Guard closes multiple river bars

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Portland, Ore., has closed the river bars at Grays Harbor, Wash., Columbia River, Tillamook Bay, Ore., Depoe Bay, Ore., Yaquina Bay, Ore., Siuslaw River, Ore., and Coos Bay, Ore., Friday due to hazardous conditions.

These bar closures are for all vessels and any request to transit these bars prior to re-opening must be approved by the Captain of the Port, Portland. Mariners may contact the Coast Guard on VHF-FM Channel 16 for further information or to request crossing.

The Umpqua River, Ore., and Chetco River, Ore., bars are not closed, but the Coast Guard still advises caution while traversing these waterways. The Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Portland, anticipates reopening of the affected bars Saturday afternoon but the possibility of increasingly severe weather remains high.

The Coast Guard will re-evaluate the bar closures on an ongoing basis and re-open the waterways as soon as offshore weather improves.

The Coast Guard understands the effects these closures have on commerce and will make every effort to re-open these waterways as soon as they are considered safe for navigation.
