Coast Guard closes Intracoastal Waterway near Walton County

PANAMA CITY, Fla. — The Coast Guard closed a four-mile section of the Intracoastal Waterway due to a land dyke breaking between Choctawatchee Bay and West Bay, Thursday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a call at 3:41 p.m. from a 65-foot motor yacht stating that a dyke had given way on the Intracoastal Waterway at mile marker 263 between Panama City and Destin.

Coast Guard Station Panama City launched immediately to assess the situation and discovered the channel unsafe for navigation due to logs and debris in the water.

The Intracoastal Waterway is closed from mile marker 262 to mile marker 266 in Walton County.

If transiting the area, boaters are urged to exercise extreme caution and to contact Coast Guard Sector Mobile by VHF-FM radio on channel 16 or at (251) 441-5976.
