Coast Guard C-130 Used to Transport Whale From Molokai to Oahu

Honolulu – Crewmembers with a U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point C-130 search plane assisted with an emergency transport operation of a whale carcass from Molokai to Oahu, Monday, July 28, 2008.

Biologists from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration were called to a beach near Kawela, Molokai, early Monday morning, a few miles east of Kaunakakai. They found a 15-foot long whale struggling in shallow water. After a long day in distress, the animal died. At the request of NOAA, the Coast Guard transported the whale on a C-130 to Oahu for research and to ensure mariner safety.

At approximately 8 p.m., Monday, the C-130 landed at Air Station Barbers Point and began the offload of the whale.

Scientists with NOAA plan to conduct a necropsy to learn more about the death.
