NEW YORK – The Coast Guard Band performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in the Star-Spangled Celebration held at Lincoln Center’s Avery Hall in Manhattan, July 4, 2013.

Based at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., the Coast Guard Band, a 55-member ensemble performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra to celebrate Independence Day for the sold-out event.

“The Coast Guard Band has played in many great halls around the world, but to perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Avery Hall is just thrilling – a career highlight,” said Capt. Kenneth Megan, the Coast Guard Band conductor.

The Coast Guard Band was organized in March 1925 with the assistance of Lt. Charles Benter, leader of the U.S. Navy Band; Dr. Walter Damrosch, conductor of the New York Philharmonic; and “American March King” John Philip Sousa, former director of the United States Marine Band. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed congressional legislation resulting in the Coast Guard Band becoming the permanent, official musical representative of the nation’s oldest continuous seagoing service.
