Coast Guard authorizes boat movement in security zones for Tropical Storm Isaac

Southeastern Coast Guard NewsTAMPA, Fla. — The Coast Guard Captain of the Port has authorized boat owners to move vessels moored within the federal security zones surrounding the Tampa Convention Center and the Tampa Bay Times Forum Saturday, in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac.

Any resident or boat owner moving a vessel out of the federal security zones, will be unable to return until the zones are no longer in effect. Currently, the security zones are scheduled to expire at 12 p.m. Aug. 31.

“As part of our heavy weather planning, we want boaters to make early preparations for the storm, said Capt. Sheryl Dickinson, Captain of the Port and commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg. “This temporary allowance ensures boaters can make the safest choices, but we encourage factoring in security zone restrictions to heavy weather planning.”

As the storm approaches, the Coast Guard urges mariners to stay off the water and clear of beaches for optimal safety. Pleasure craft are advised to seek safe harbor at the earliest possible time.

Prudent mariners are encouraged to check for updates at www.http://homeport.uscg.mil in the Sector St. Petersburg Port Directory , under safety and security links.
