Coast Guard assists six from grounded vessel at Umpqua, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard assisted six people from a grounded 21-foot vessel at Winchester Point at Umpqua, Ore., Monday.

Coast Guard Station Umpqua River recieved a distress call from the people aboard the boat at approximately and launched a 47-motor lifeboat crew and a ground party to the scene.

The water was too shallow for the lifeboat to close in on the vessel, but the ground party was able to reach the people and attempted to dewater the vessel, which was taking on water from the incoming surf. Dewatering pumps could not keep up with the incoming tide and the vessel was left to be recovered by a salvage operator.

No injuries or pollution were reported.
