Coast Guard assists sinking sailboat in Mexican waters

11th Coast Guard District NewsSAN DIEGO – A Coast Guard boat crew assisted a man whose sailboat was taking on water in Mexican waters approximately 11 miles south of San Diego, Saturday night.

A crew from Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Los Angeles-Long Beach were operating a 25-foot Response Boat in the San Diego area, and responded to the distress call.

The man contacted the Joint Harbor Operations Center just after 7 p.m., Saturday, stating that he was taking on water and asking for assistance.

Once Coast Guard obtained clearance for the boat crew to enter Mexican territorial waters, JHOC personnel diverted the crew to assist the man.

The Coast Guard crew attempted to help the man stop the flooding, but the source of the flooding could not be determined or contained.

The boat crew safely towed the sailboat back to San Diego at approximately 12:20 a.m., Sunday.
