Coast Guard assists in search for missing Ft. Myers man

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coast Guard assets from Station Fort Myers Beach and Air Station Clearwater, assisted in the search for a missing Ft. Myers man Monday and Tuesday, after he was reported missing in the vicinity of Matanzas Pass in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Michael Hayes, 43, of Fort Myers Beach was reported missing by his fellow crewmembers aboard the 63-foot fishing vessel Ray & Wease, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Monday.

After receiving the notification via channel 16 VHF-FM radio, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, in St. Petersburg, Fla., immediately directed the launch of a 33-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Ft. Myers Beach.

The boat crew, along with a Lee County Sheriff Marine, Sanibel Fire Rescue, and a boatcrew from the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) arrived on scene and searched throughout the night. A Coast Guard H60 Jayhawk helicopter crew also joined in the search.

Tuesday, at approximately 9 a.m., a good Samaritan reported finding the body of a man near Bowditch Point, Ft. Myers Beach.

Lee County Sheriff later identifed the deceased man as Hayes.

Lee County is the investigating agency.
