COAST GUARD ASSISTS DISABLED VESSEL

HAMPTON BAYS N.Y. – The Coast Guard is towing a 38-foot recreational boat to safety after the crew reported an engine failure approximately 40 miles south of Shinnecock, N.Y. at 7:30 p.m. today.

The Fountain 1, from Hampton Bays, N.Y., was carrying five passengers when its three outboard engines lost power. There are no reports of injuries

A 47-foot Coast Guard rescue boat crew arrived on scene at approximately 9:20 p.m. Once on scene, the Coast Guard rescue crew placed the Fountain 1 in tow. The Coast Guard is towing the boaters and vessel to Shinnecock.

“Some situations are hard to prepare for,” said John Olsen, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, Operations Unit Controller. “The best way for boaters to prepare for the unexpected is to have equipment such as a radio, EPIRB, sound producing device, life jackets and flares aboard and readily available.”

The Coast Guard would like to remind all boaters that they can obtain free safety and equipment checks from the Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadron.
