Coast Guard assists crew of vessel taking on water

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard assisted the crew of a vessel taking on water 30 nautical miles west of the entrance to the Columbia River, Sunday.

The Coast Guard Sector Columbia River Command Center received a distress call from the 36-foot commercial fishing vessel Elijah at approximately 8:30a.m. The vessel was taking on water and the crew was unable to determine the source of the leak. Station Cape Disappointment and Air Station Astoria launched a 47-motor lifeboat crew and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to assist.

The helicopter crew was able to safely lower a dewatering pump to the vessel’s crew, which successfully dewatered the vessel and patched the leak when it was found in the bilge. The motor lifeboat crew then towed the fishing vessel into port. There were no injuries reported.
