Coast Guard assists boaters near Seward, Alaska

Coast Guard Alaska News
KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard responded to a call for assistance from a disabled boat in Resurrection Bay near Seward Friday.

A small boat crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Mustang towed the 16-foot skiff, with four people aboard, to the Seward small boat harbor after the skiff suffered engine problems and the crew called the Coast Guard for assistance.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Anchorage were notified by cell phone by the vessel’s crew who reported that the vessel was disabled, adrift and they required assistance. The Coast Guard issued a marine assistance request broadcast asking for the help of mariners in the area but dispatched the Mustang’s small boat from the cutter when the MARB went unanswered.

“The two adults and two children aboard were wearing life jackets but they did not have a VHF-FM radio aboard,” said Michael McNeil, a command duty officer with Coast Guard Sector Anchorage. “We encourage all mariners to carry a VHF radio with them as a means of communication. Several vessels passed by the boaters after they became disabled, but without a radio they could not hail the other vessels for help and cell phones do not have reception in all areas.”

VHF-FM radio is the primary communications network for the maritime boating community. Also, consider a personal emergency beacon and if you have one ensure it is registered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Alaska boaters with Alaska-based cell phone carriers can also dial *CG to reach the Coast Guard command center in Juneau for assistance.

Weather in the Resurrection Bay area was reportedly 12 mph winds with seas at 2-feet and clear skies.

The Coast Guard Cutter Mustang is a 110-foot island-class patrol boat homeported in Seward. The crew’s primary mission are search and rescue and law enforcement.
