Coast Guard assists boater in distress near Catalina Island

cg-D11LOS ANGELES – the Coast Guard assisted a boater in distress near Long Point off Catalina Island, Friday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach received a Mayday call via the emergency broadcast channel 16 at 5:03 p.m. from a boater stating his 50-foot sailing vessel, Shiloh, was taking on water near Long Point Catalina.
Watchstanders immediately vectored in crews from Baywatch Isthmus and Baywatch Avalon to assist the vessel.
Baywatch Isthmus arrived onscene and provided dewatering assistance to the vessel. Baywatch Isthmus crews safely escorted the vessel in Avalon Harbor.
No injuries were reported.
The Coast Guard recommends marine-band radios are set to channel 16 for boaters in distress to be able to quickly call for help.
