Coast Guard assists 3 men, dog in Lake Pontchartrain

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard assisted in the rescue of three people and a dog on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain near Goose Point, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at approximately 1 p.m. from St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office of a vessel sinking in Lake Pontchartrain.

STPSO launched three ready boats to aid with the search.

A Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew that was training in the area arrived on scene and located the three men on shore in the marsh along with their submerged flat-bottom Jon boat that was 10 feet from shore.

The helicopter crew deployed their rescue swimmer to the marsh who then vectored in the STPSO’s flat boat to retrieve the three men.

“The hunter’s boat sank approximately two hours before we arrived on scene,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas Gardner. “They were wet and cold; hypothermia had not set in yet because they were wearing the proper cold weather clothing.”

Once the men were safely transferred to STPSO’s boat, the helicopter crew hoisted their rescue swimmer and departed the scene.

The three men were reported to be in good health and required no medical attention.

The Coast Guard advises mariners to wear personal protective equipment such as anti-exposure coveralls during the winter months to protect against hypothermia. The Coast Guard also recommends mariners carry signaling devices such as day and night flares and to always wear life jackets while out on the water. Life jackets and signaling devices increase a boater’s chances of survival in the event of an emergency. Also, ensure that you have enough life jackets for everyone aboard the boat.
