Coast Guard and local agencies searching for missing swimmer

Coast Guard District 14 NewsHONOLULU – Coast Guard and local agencies are searching for a missing 66-year-old male swimmer, Charles Slezak, in the vicinity of Kiahuna Plantation near Poipu, Kauai Tuesday.

Search and rescue coordinators at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu were notified of the ongoing search by Kauai County Fire Department Personnel at 9 a.m. The island visitor, six feet tall, medium build, was last seen wearing black and white shorts, a blue collared shirt and carrying pink swim fins at approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday.

An aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point is currently on scene and searching the area. Additionally, the Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island, 110-foot patrol boat, is in route from Nawiliwili Harbor and will begin searching upon arrival to the search area.

“The Coast Guard is looking for any information that can assist in the search for Mr. Slezak,” said Lt. Leigh Cotterell, Sector Honolulu’s public affairs officer.
