Coast Guard and Jefferson County conduct search-and-rescue forum

8th Coast Guard District NewsPROSPECT, Ky. — The Coast Guard and the Louisville/Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency are co-hosting a local search-and-rescue forum regarding best practices and techniques for responding to persons in distress in the marine environment beginning Tuesday.

Members from Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and other federal, state and local agencies will be participating in the two-day forum to improve interagency cooperation, increase search-and-rescue effectiveness, enhance crew safety and foster a better understanding of search-and-rescue fundamentals among first responders.

“The purpose of this forum is to bring together response professionals from around the Louisville area and to give them a venue to further develop interagency cohesion in order to provide a timelier response in all search-and-rescue cases,” said Capt. Larry Hewett, commander of Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley.

Agencies and organizations attending the forum include: Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Harrods Creek Fire Department, Louisville Fire Department, North Oldham Fire Department, Clarksville Fire Department, New Albany Fire Department, Louisville Metro Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, KY Department of Fish and Wildlife and many other fire and police agencies from throughout the Louisville/Metro area.
