Coast Guard and California Department of Fish and Game monitor response to sunken vessel

Sunken tug vessel in Broad SloughSAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. Coast Guard and California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) responded to a partially sunken tug boat in Broad Slough near Antioch, Calif., Nov. 3.

The Coast Guard received a report of a sheen coming from a partially sunken tug boat in Broad Slough. Assets from the Coast Guard and DFG arrived on scene to investigate. Hardboom was deployed and the diesel was contained within it.

The maximum discharge potential onboard the tug is approximately 800 gallons.

Both agencies are working with the owner of the tug to contain the sheen, clean it from the water and prevent additional diesel from leaking into the water. No wildlife impacts have been reported, but DFG continues to monitor the area.

The Coast Guard urges the public to report any pollution to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802 or online at www.nrc.uscg.mil. The National Response Center is the federal point of contact for all oil and chemical spills.
