Coast Guard Airlifts Sailor to Kona Hospital

HONOLULU — A U.S. Coast Guard rescue aircrew hoisted an ill man from a motor vessel about 20 miles southwest of the Big Island at approximately 10 a.m. today.

A Coast Guard flight mechanic aboard an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point hoisted a 22-year-old man from the Gibraltar-flagged motor vessel BBC India.

The injured man, suffering from abdominal pain, was flown to Kona Hospital, where Hawaii County emergency medical services personnel were waiting.

The cargo vessel’s master contacted Coast Guard rescue coordinators at approximately 8 a.m. today and reported the distress. The vessel was then directed closer to shore and a helicopter was launched from Oahu.
