Coast Guard Airlifts Medical Team Despite Storm

BOSTON – The Coast Guard airlifted a medical team from Boston to Martha’s Vineyard and then returned the team and a newborn in need of advanced medical assistance in Boston during today’s storm.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod picked up a neo-natal medical team from Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts-New England Medical around 10 a.m. and rushed the team to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. The aircrew returned the team and infant in their care to Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts-New England Medical about 12:30 p.m.

Due to sustained winds exceeding 60 mph, regular air ambulance services were unavailable. The Coast Guard provides this life saving service to Cape Cod’s island residents when other emergency transportation means are not available. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod completes about 40 transports each year from the two islands.
