Coast Guard airlifts man involved in dive accident

dive flagFORT MACON, N.C. – Coast Guard rescue helicopter and boat crews medevaced a 56-year-old man after a dive accident approximately 30 miles south of Beaufort Inlet, N.C. Saturday.

A crewman aboard the dive boat Midnight Express called Coast Guard Sector North Carolina at 10:45 a.m., reporting that a diver had completed a 110-foot dive and upon resurfacing complained of shortness of breath and other symptoms.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon and a rescue helicopter air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City launched to assist the man. After arriving on scene, the man was transferred to the Coast Guard boat before being airlifted by the rescue helicopter at 12:04 p.m.

The rescue helicopter crew transported the patient to Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Va.
