Coast Guard Air Station to host emergency preparedness open house Saturday

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Coast Guard Support Center Elizabeth City will host a multi-agency, ‘Were Ready, Are You?” emergency preparedness open house Saturday, May 31, 2008.

The goal of the event is to showcase the capabilities and inter-agency coordination between local, state, federal, and non-governmental emergency response personnel and to help prepare the public for emergencies in northeastern North Carolina. Participants will demonstrate their capabilities and provide educational information to visitors from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

The Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City will perform a Search and Rescue demonstration at 11:00 a.m. The Air Station provides emergency response and conducts Maritime Homeland Defense operations through out North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic region using HH-60J helicopters and HC-130H patrol aircraft.

Regional emergency service responders representing seven counties in North Eastern, N.C. will hold a hazardous materials decontamination demonstration at 12:00 p.m. The Elizabeth City Fire Department will also perform two puppet shows for children in attendance at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Booths and displays that highlight preparedness and response to hurricanes, mass casualties, floods or other unfortunate occurrences will also be available for visitors looking for preparedness information.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency FEMA will have a booth that features materials from Ready.gov to help families, individuals and businesses develop their emergency plans, and mitigation publications about the National Flood Insurance Program and how people can build safer and stronger.
