Coast Guard aids boaters adrift off Mexican Coast

SAN DIEGO — Coast Guard crews assisted two boaters whose boat had broken down nine miles off the Mexican coast Wednesday evening.

The Coast Guard received a distress call from the boaters at approximately 4:30 p.m., stating that the engine of their 20-foot boat had failed and they were adrift.

The Coast Guard Cutter Halibut, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Marina Del Rey, Calif., was diverted from its patrol to assist the boaters.

An MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter was launched from Coast Guard Sector San Diego to help locate the disabled boat.

By 5:45 p.m. the boat was located and the Halibut began towing it back toward San Diego.

Once near San Diego, a commercial salvage company took over to complete the tow into the harbor.
