CGNewsTip: Coast Guard cutter Abbie Burgess assists lobstermen

OWLS HEAD: On a brisk but sunny Wednesday morning, the Coast Guard cutter Abbie Burgess glided out of her Rockland berth and headed for a tangle of lobster traps, buoys and ropes sunk deep in the depths of Penobscot Bay about seven miles south of Owls Head near Two Bush Ledge.

The ship’s captain, USCG Chief Warrant Officer Paul Dilger, had his sights set on two jumbled messes of gear, one of which he lightheartedly estimated included up to “a billion” traps.

“Actually, it’s probably more like 200 traps,” said Dilger. But those 200 traps would have to be lifted up from a depth of more than 350 feet.
