Captain of the Port partially reopens Port of Hampton Roads

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Hampton Roads partially reopened the Port of Hampton Roads at 6 p.m. on Sept. 6, 2008.

The sole exception to the opening is the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) from Great Bridge Lock south to the Virginia/North Carolina border, which remains closed due to the closure of the ICW in North Carolina.

Mariners are still advised to use extreme caution while on the water. Tropical force winds, high surf and heavy rainfall may have caused strong currents, marine debris and hazards to navigation.

Mariners can contact the Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Command Center at (757) 668-5580 for amplifying information. The public may call (757) 668-5617 for an updated recorded message with current hurricane conditions, or they can visit the U.S. Coast Guard Fifth District Public Information website at http://hanna.uscgstormwatch.com.

When in doubt or in case of an emergency, the public is encouraged to contact Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads’ 24-hour emergency response center at (757) 638-6641.
